„In centuries past, weaving was far more than mere craft. It was a communal act, a shared rhythm of life. In the villages of Transylvania, for instance, the weaving workshop served not only as a place of labor, but of song. As hands moved across warp and weft, voices rose in harmony, binding melody to material. In this intimate choreography of thread and tone,
Music and textile became inseparable.
It is from this deep rooted tradition that textile artist Jeanette Sziemay draws inspiration for her remarkable installation, Sound Weaving. Here, the artist breathes new life into historic embroidery patterns from cross stitch motifs to the intricate designs of Arabic carpets, translating them into musical compositions. Each stitch, each knot becomes a note, punched into delicate cards that feed a hand-cranked music box. What once adorned cloth now sings.
Sermay's work bridges cultures and centuries. She reimagines patterns from the Pergamon Museum's rich collection of carpets and textiles, and from the Victoria and Albert Museum's Azerbaijani embroideries.
Even the traditional Saxon cross stitch motifs of Leipzig find voice here, resonating not only through sound, but through textiles delicately laser cut to echo the original forms. As you move through the installation, this textile forest, you are invited to listen, to look, and to reflect. Here, threads speak and patterns play.“
